| Habit | A solitary, barrel shaped cactus with distinct, large ribs and rigid spines. Slow growing, but will get quite large with age. |
| Height | Can grow up to 50cm in diameter and height. |
| Colour | Younger plants are blue/green in colour and will turn grey/blue with age. Spines are a golden yellow. |
| Flowers | Attractive yellow/cream flowers appear in late spring. Flowers have tattered frilled edges and are satin like in appearance. |
| Aspect | Happy in either a full sun or part shade position. |
| Ouch Factor | High - Spines are needle like and quite sharp. Handle with caution. |
